The following students‘ school projects will be the focus of the action learning process:”A Clean School Park”, ”Engaging school breaks”, ”A Private Tutoring Network and Learning Centre with advanced teaching and learning materials”, ”Fair Living”, ”Establishing a effective student council for a socially and ecologically fair school environment”, ”Suggestion Box”.
In the next 8 months the students will regularly come together in an ”action learning set” to critically reflect on their project processes. Strategic questioning will help the students to develop solutions and actions for further project planning.

1st prize winning concept „Never mind the future?? – No! – Water-management with a perspective!” results in further action for a sustainable future
Experts of the waste-water-management company „Emschergenossenschaft” started to build an expert group to further research the potential, and analyse the cost-benefit, of conducting a waste-water-heat-using installation to produce energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and costs in the Ruhr area.
The results of the study and further plans were introduced by Adrian Treis of the Emschergenossenschaft at the Agenda 21-round table discussion „Waste Water – Energy of the Future?!”. The round table was initiated by the Local Agenda 21 in cooperation with the students of the 1st prize winning project „Never mind the future?? – No! – Water management with a perspective!” and the university of Duisburg-Essen. Numerous people from Local Authorities, Energy Sector Businesses , residential owners around the Ruhr area, consultants and research institutions discussed the potential of the project and (future) developments. A pilot waste-water-heat-using plant is planned to be implemented in the city of Bochum. Further more, plans are being made make this 1st prize winning project a reality.

„Explore the Global Village” – creates’ education concept is awarded first prize at the „FOCUS” school contest „Schools build the Future” 2006/2007.
The project
The students and trainees applied their researched knowledge and expertise to develop a workable concept to use a waste-water-heat-using installation in a sewage system to heat and cool down a residential area in Essen, Germany. They worked together with key stakeholders in the waste-water-management, the local authority, residential owners and research institutions to demonstrate the ecological potential and cost-effectiveness of such an installation.
The panel unanimously described this project as „intelligent and outstandingly implemented” and praised the successful teamwork. |
